Haiti Relief - Geocoin Auctions

Postby Jackalgirl » Sat Jan 23, 2010 10:41 am

Howdy, everyone --

In case you're not regular visitors to the Geocoin Forums over at Groundspeak, there are several geocoin auctions going on to raise money for charities to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

As of this writing, there are auctions for the following coins:

Image
Fifth Anniversary Compass Rose Geocoin - Yemon Yime Edition
- This geocoin has an actual working compass in the middle (the coin is very thick). Yemon Yime's coins, especially his Artist Editions, are very sought-after, which explains the current bid ($168.05)

Little Wing: Personal Geocoin (Artist Edition
- This is an absolute little gem of a coin. The back of it looks like a tulip (note the hidden, tiny ladybug). The front has two panels that swivel so that from that view, it's a ladybug. There is all kinds of luscious recessed detail under the red of the wings. It is an amazing coin to handle and one of the most nicely-designed personal geocoins I've ever seen.

Here Comes the Sun - Antique Copper Regular Edition
- This is a suncatcher, meaning that the interior shapes are completely cut out and filled with translucent enamel, kind of like stained glass. It's a shaped coin and is quite lovely.

Peters Trio - Personal Geocoin (Limited Edition)
- This is the Peters Trio's personal geocoin, and it's their limited edition -- two-tone with gold and black nickel. I have one in my collection and it's striking: the detail is wonderful and so is the symmetry of the design on the front.

Moebius Geocoin - Artist Edition
- Last but not least, one of my own designs. The regular editions are still for sale over at the Geocoin Store, but this is one of only 20 Artist Edition coins minted. It's two-tone black nickel over gold and is very brightly colored.

Please go check out these auctions. Some of them benefit specific charities, and some of them let you specify your charity of choice. It's awesome to give to charities directly, but here's an opportunity to get your hands on a nice limited-edition coin and give to a worthy cause.

The thread at Groundspeak.

More geocoins are going up! This next one is pretty special:

Image
Bell Witch Mystery Geocoin
- Mystery coins are untrackable coins that are minted by unknown persons and are left in caches. Sometimes they're also mysteriously mailed to recipients. It's unusual -- or should be -- to see one up for sale on eBay, but permission has been granted for this one to be sold for the benefit of the victims of the Haiti Earthquake.

Tennessee Jed Personal - Mint Error
- This is one of 15 mint error coins - that is, 15 coins were produced that weren't colored as the originator wanted them. Mistake coins are pretty rare, as are mistake coins that are trackable (as this one is). Usually your mistakes show up during the sampling phase, when the mint produces a few test coins so that you can see how your plating/color combo actually looks (and samples typically don't have tracking numbers on them).
